I saw this little boy inscribing PURA VIDA in the sand and I thought he was brilliant! Even though this phrase is a common response to “De nada”, (you’re welcome). It was at this point that I realized the richness of this phrase.

I was listening to @jerico.mandybur and something she said really hit home. She said the only place we actually grow and learn is when we are comfortable in the moment. When we are present we are made to sit with how we feel, what we are thinking, and whether or not we are ok with it at the moment. 
Rarely are we ok with just being, we constantly seek stimulation, we have to know where we are going and know our next move even after that. But when we are still is when the magic happens. 
Sometimes life throws us in for a loop and wipes out our schedules. It shakes the ground from beneath us to challenge us to find our footing. Why? Because that’s where we will find our strength, our courage, our creativity. Our stillness brings us back to ourselves so that we can find peace amongst the the physical chaos, the fluctuations, the uncertainty. All of that is setting us up to withstand what’s coming next. This too is growth. 
Can we fully appreciate and see the good and bad in life and accept it all. Because each serves a purpose. 
Honestly this so called “vacation” was the toughest trips I’ve ever been on. I traversed through different cities alone. It felt like all the things that could’ve gone wrong on a getaway did go wrong. Did I mention I even got in a car accident there??? But honestly beyond all the challenges I surpassed, I figured so much about myself and rediscovered my self-worth. Deep down inside I know my soul called for this tumultuous trip, this struggle I placed myself in. And guess what? I’m still here, I didn’t get knocked down and I literally survived once again. So even though I didn’t get the ideal vacation, relaxing for hours on end. I got what my soul called for. 
Can we practice taking the good from the bad to embrace the NOW, the PURA VIDA ✨PURE LIFE✨

This summer, we at SPY are delighted to award the fourth annual scholarship for our yoga teacher training program, “The Yoga of Mindfulness and Accessibility.”
.
We created the Yoga Service Scholarship in memory of our friend John Valdez, who was an advocate for making yoga relevant and accessible to a wider portion of the community.
.
Congratulations to the 2019 recipient of the Yoga Service Scholarship: Guadalupe Arellanes Castro! 🎉
.
Guadalupe is the fourth child of immigrant parents, and she is passionate about women's rights and public health. She began her yoga journey while finishing her master's degree and working full time at an emergency domestic violence and sexual assault shelter. By strengthening her practice, Guadalupe began to reap the physical and spiritual benefits of yoga and would often encourage women staying at the shelter to attend classes at the local wellness center.
.
While numerous women did attend yoga while in shelter, many did not have the resources to continue their practice upon their exit. Guadalupe witnessed first-hand how beneficial just one or two yoga classes could be to survivors and wanted to find a way to bring long-term yoga to the communities that would benefit from it the most. 🌸
.
This fall Guadalupe will be starting a PhD program at UC Riverside where she will work with cis and transgender female immigrant survivors of sexual assault to gather their stories and push for humane immigration policies and mental health resources in the United States.
.
Recognizing that this research will open up wounds, Guadalupe wanted to bring yoga and mindfulness into these difficult discussions as a tool for healing and body reclamation.
.
We are thrilled to have Guadalupe in our Teacher Training program this year, and look forward to seeing how her yoga knowledge can complement her important work in the future. 🌟
