Czech footballer Josef Sural passed away on Monday in a tragic car accident while returning from an away match in Turkey. This tragedy has brought football fans from the Czech Republic and Turkey together in remembrance. Sural's old club AC Sparta Prague donated the gate receipts from their last match to the player's family, while Alanyaspor in Turkey are planning to do the same with the returns from their Monday match against Konyaspor.
Alanyaspor also retired Sural's #90
Jersey and will be honoring his 2.5 year contract, giving all of the money to his family (Source: https://m.sabah.com.tr/galeri/spor/alanyaspordan-josef-sural-icin-anlamli-karar). There have also been moments of silence before all Turkish league matches this weekend, and it is important to remember the sacrifices that footballers make for their teams and their families.
In the age of industrial football, where the search for profits has become the main goal of many football clubs, it is refreshing to see the generosity of both AC Sparta Prague and Alanyaspor. Despite this tragedy, football still offers a space for people to come together whatever their national backgrounds may be. RIP Josef Sural, and I wish everyone who has been affected by this tragedy well. 🇨🇿🇹🇷🇨🇿🇹🇷 Thank you to @acsparta_cz and @alanyaspor for the pictures.
