A block to my creativity moved; a fog became glass and shattered. I understand more about why my mind ever broke off from my body in the first place. It is not ever quite fully understood, perhaps. But when it comes, the clarity comes with a lightness of being. Some of my body’s buoyancy of late comes from the lack of physical weight; my implants together weighed close to 4 lbs and then there is the capsule of scar tissue that had grown up around them. I think the feeling of lightness mostly comes from the lack of physical pain. I was in pain from the time I had my mastectomy in Dec.2012 until my infection finally healed in Oct. of 2013 but then decided to pursue reconstruction again, with the pain returning for six more years. I managed the pain with drugs...from pain pills to anxiety pills...and an ever increasing mindfulness around my diet. Movement practice helped but it took a lot of mental labor to make myself move. If I could bring myself to the mat I would start with a gentle yogic flow and work myself into contortions and movements that felt more primal. I hooked into old versions of myself that were lodged within my body and wriggled and breathed them free. I birthed them from my body so that I could become the creature I was being asked to be. ..............................................:.. I move freely now, I’m almost in constant motion. I excitedly return to the music and the mat like it’s my religion. I can’t stop bouncing and singing and dancing. My center of gravity feels anchored...My balance seemed to correct itself immediately, not to mention the positions I can arrange my body in simply because I don’t have breasts in my way.  And as always I am grateful to move and live in and make the most of this miraculous vessel for as long as I am allowed.

Capoeira is known for the aesthetics of its flow and natural movements. 
However, the function of two fundamental movements in particular are rooted 
in the fight of the art.

Dodging with steps and body angles, and evading with rolls and spins
must be functional, in that, ones safety is at risk of being compromised. 
Making movements “Look Good” is a byproduct of their practical practice, and not vice versa.

While blocking and parrying are key to most fighting arts, capoeira seeks
to be elusive and it places evasion over blocking when possible.

Then at some point, begin to fine tune your movement. Know why. Get other eyes on you, to tweak patterns you may not be cognizant of. Feel the connects from the bottom of your feet to the hair root, or not. The more integrated we become, the more aware we are of how we move, the better we move. Cleaning up shitty patterns, laying down patterns that will serve us better in the long game. Then, the results will come -— I have had 4 babies, trashed my body in competitions and training, thus robbed areas of mobility and stability. Being able to perform this @trxtraining hamstring variation, keeping hips stable and ribs from flaring, even being a mater trainer for the company teaching hundreds of courses and presentations, has taken years of practice. Get moving and do it everyday and then begin to fine tune it. 🎻

By practicing planche, my locomotion and weight transfer between upper and lower body gets easier. ⠀

And even though I don’t practice the stick balance much right now, practicing other hand eye coordination work on a daily basis has still progressed the stick work without practice.

Myofascial release.
A term used more often than understood. But in a world where everyone complains about muscles stiffness I’d like to take a minute to tell you about why I always spend a good 10-20 minutes on my roller before I starting my yoga practice.

I’ll start with what fascia is in the first place. Fascia is a spider web like white film that exists between the layers of muscles in the body. Specifically, fascia controls how much, or how little, the muscles are able to move around each other within the body. For me, my shoulder blade, neck, chest area’s are alllllways tight/stiff.

So people who constantly complain about muscle stiffness are most likely suffering from their fascia layers solidifying the muscles to one another. Because the body uses fascia as an adaptive protection system to keep the muscles from over-stretching. So their is stiffness going on, just not in the muscle fibers themselves.

The rollers main function is to press into the muscles to create a stretching-like effect. That stretching-like effect will cause the fascia layers between the muscles to release a little bit at a time allowing for more movement.

Myofascial release.
A term used more often than understood. But in a world where everyone complains about muscles stiffness I’d like to take a minute to tell you about why I always spend a good 10-20 minutes on my roller before I starting my yoga practice.

I’ll start with what fascia is in the first place. Fascia is a spider web like white film that exists between the layers of muscles in the body. Specifically, fascia controls how much, or how little, the muscles are able to move around each other within the body. For me, my shoulder blade, neck, chest area’s are alllllways tight/stiff.

So people who constantly complain about muscle stiffness are most likely suffering from their fascia layers solidifying the muscles to one another. Because the body uses fascia as an adaptive protection system to keep the muscles from over-stretching. So their is stiffness going on, just not in the muscle fibers themselves.

The rollers main function is to press into the muscles to create a stretching-like effect. That stretching-like effect will cause the fascia layers between the muscles to release a little bit at a time allowing for more movement.

It was a day honouring the work and dedication  of those who regard themselves as my students.

You have all walked with me on this path for a decade. 
_
It’s been journey of self inquiry, discovery, discipline, responsibility, movement (a lot of that!), music, story, theatre, play, performance, art, friendship, agreement, disagreements, disputes, joy, tears, disappointment, fear, failure, success and celebration- all that which is a reflection of life, living, being and to be here.
_
It has been an honour have been able to relate, teach and serve you as I have. Through my dedication to you and my practice what I have learned is priceless.

So I thank you all for the lessons 🙏 on the journey.

Working my way back into the pancake/roadkill stretch. ⁣

As a younger man I often let my ego drive my yoga/movement practice. I would literally try to out-yoga the person on the mat next to me. Not only did this build bad habits, it also led to dysfunctional and painful compensations just for the sake of jamming myself into a particular shape. ⁣
•⁣
Years of navigating around and through chronic pain has led me to operate from a more internal approach—to gently assess my current state and find the edge that I need for today. I back off when my body gives me the signal, move deeper when there is space. Sure, this approach still can be uncomfortable at times, but ultimately it is a practice of seeking harmonious communication with myself. ⁣
•⁣
The goal is not to look like anyone else or do that cool trick that someone else can do. The goal is the joyful expression of physical freedom. ⁣Don’t I look happy?😜

🌀Building body awareness through FKM movement classes (3/3) 🌀

🌀I’ve thoroughly enjoyed learning a different pace of movement with the FKM classes. The slow, micro transitions make you think about how you do things. They bring awareness to how you move your body in space, how you see your body, how you think about yourself, the messages you give yourself about your body and about your pain. The movements serve as a means to explore options in the body and when you have more options, you can consciously decide to do things differently 🤸🏽‍♀️🤸🏽‍♀️

🌀I’ve thoroughly enjoyed learning a different pace of movement with the FKM classes. The slow, micro transitions make you think about how you do things. They bring awareness to how you move your body in space, how you see your body, how you think about yourself, the messages you give yourself about your body and about your pain. The movements serve as a means to explore options in the body and when you have more options, you can consciously decide to do things differently 🤸🏽‍♀️🤸🏽‍♀️
THE REASON BEHIND

Why do you do what you do?

Take even fitness for instance. Goal of aesthetics brings constant dissatisfaction because there is always someone genetically more leaner, or opposite - more muscular, and there is always someone who surgically adjusted all those bits and pieces, and if you ask me personally - aesthetics doesn’t come that much from randomly sweating your ass off, but way more from lifestyle and nutrition.

That's why no matter how much I want to look good - it has never been my main goal.

Instead, even at times when I felt lost, I would always watch people like @dylanwerneryoga or @yuenjon in awe, thinking - that’s what I want to do - I want to move my body freely in all directions like gravity has nothing to do with me.

That's why I’ll never mind exploring handstands, strength elements, calisthenics and mobility for hours - because they allow me to move any way I want!

When you have your reason - everything makes sense.

Why do you do what you do?

It is easy to get carried away or not even ask yourself your own reasons behind. It is easy to follow the trends, forgetting that we are all unique with very different goals, abilities, and purpose.

Take even fitness for instance. Goal of aesthetics brings constant dissatisfaction because there is always someone genetically more leaner, or opposite - more muscular, and there is always someone who surgically adjusted all those bits and pieces, and if you ask me personally - aesthetics doesn’t come that much from randomly sweating your ass off, but way more from lifestyle and nutrition.

5 years ago, my doctor told me I needed surgery on my left shoulder. I’d dislocated it enough times to stop counting. It first happened playing rugby and became so unstable that it would pop out lying in bed. One of the last times it dislocated was diving into a pool. I decided against surgery and came across movement practice shortly after. Now I’m doing one-arm handstands on that shoulder.

I’m not posting this as a testament to myself, but as a testament to the body’s ability to heal itself when provided with the appropriate stimuli in the appropriate dosages. We can address many of our injuries by moving and paying attention. As with all radical human interventions, surgery can cause as many unforeseen problems as it solves and should be viewed as the last resort in most situations. Natural systems are far more complex and self-correcting than we tend to assume. And artificial interventions are far less successful than the hubristic human intellect would have us believe. If you have tight hips listen up! A common approach most people take on forward folding is with straight legs, reaching for the toes. BUT (and this is important) we will typically bend at the thoracic spine (upper back) and we don't utilize the anterior tilt of the pelvis! (Big mistake) Stop curling your upper back into a taco and master your hip hinge!

Here's how in #seatedforwardfold .
Step 1: Bend your legs. Tilt your pelvis forwards bringing your stomach and chest to your thighs. Hug your arms around them. Work on straightening your legs, but maintaining that relationship between chest and thighs (this will ensure you're hinging the hips as you stretch your hamstrings).

Step 2: Once you have adequate flexibility, your next step will be to grab onto your feet. BUT... Rather than straightening your legs, bring your elbows to the ground; THEN work on straightening your legs. This again helps you to keep that anterior tilt in the pelvis.

Today I did train the hip. The focus was on hip extension. Worked hard on the hamstring and glutes. 
SPINAL TWIST in 90/90. Keep pelvis still and rotate the torso as much as possible left and then right. 5x left/right with 5sec hold at the end.

NORWEGIAN SEA MONSTER |
Back and forth to 90/90 for hip extension.

2 PAILs/ 2 RAILs simultaneously to open the range of motion. Front leg and back leg PAILs and RAILs.

FRONT LEG PAILs pushing the knee and ankle (more emphasis in the ankle) push  as hard as you want to rotate the floor.
BACK LEG PAILs bring knee into the ground.

FRONT LEG RAILs opposite, move away your ankle as far as possible away from the floor.

BACK LEG RAILs try to lift the leg away from the ground (expect butt cramp 🤭. Squeeze glutes to try to lift the leg.

I think style is innate as well as earned. We all have that spark of creativity in us but it takes time to develop the ability to fully express it. Im still working on developing my own style inside my practice. Adding a bit of my own flavour to certain combinations and flows.

My training this week has still been rehab focused.  I had a big break through in finding the connection to and awareness of proper activation of my rhomboids. The last year has been a journey of physical discovery of the muscles in my back. Muscle I knew of in theory and believed were firing and functioning properly, until different injuries revealed that wasn't the case at all. No matter how much my periods of injury has sucked and no matter how mush I miss handstands right now (more or less to the stars and back...), I am at the same time forever grateful for these discoveries and connections to the back of my body. I know it makes me stronger and better for the future. Let's get thos rhomboids firing 🔥
