trust me- read to the end of this story
Once upon a time, there was a vicious snake that lived near a small village. There the snake would torment all the villagers, eat their small farm animals and eventually started attacking them and their children. The villagers were overwhelmed by hatred for this snake, little did they know that the snake thought this is how a snake should behave, and so for years the snake behaved the same way toward the villagers and nd the villagers behaved the same way toward the snake, always trying to hurt each other.
One day, a wise old saint walked into the village, all the villagers fell to his feet with heir despair about the snake, they wanted the holy man's permission to kill the snake. The wise old man suggested that he speak to the snake first. There he went into the bushes, the snake, out of habit lept toward him to bite, The wise old man, being wise stepped out of the way let the snake fall to the ground. He then asked the snake, "Have you had enough? Because the villagers have!" Therewith a soft voice and depth to his words, he told the snake of non-violence. The snake was enamored by this kind man and promised to no longer hurt or torment anyone.
Years passed and the villagers were finally happy, the snake no longer bothered them. And no matter what, the snake was never violent. One day, the same wise old saint passed through the village, he happened to see the snake in the bushes, there the snake was beaten and bruised and meek, the saint knelt down and asked him what happened. The snake replied, that he vowed to never be violent again, but many had taken advantage of that and would abuse him. The saint stood and thought, then he said: " I told you not to bite, I didn't say you couldn't hiss!" I love this story and even bought it for my mother when she was almost 70. Its a lesson many who try to live a peaceful life must learn, there are those who will take advantage of your kindness. In the most loving way, don't bite but if you need to, protect your peace....and hiss!
