This month is mental health awareness month and before the month is over, I just want to say something quickly. Look out for your friends and family, not just those who obviously seem extra stressed, or sadder than usual. Ask people regularly how they’re feeling, but ask with a whole heart so the person you’re asking knows you care. Although there are many people struggling with things like stress, depression, anxiety, etc., not everyone shows it. There are people who are experts at hiding their true emotions, not just with a smile, but with a whole believable act. Sometimes it’s the one you least expect, the person that “lights up a room,” who easily starts a conversation, the one who makes everyone laugh or smile. Life is difficult for anyone struggling with a mental health disorder, it’s even harder for those who everyday have to deceive everyone around them about their wellbeing. So don’t just ask, “how are you?” wait for a genuine answer, let those around you know you’re willing to listen and care. Sometimes all one needs is someone who cares, at least for a short moment. You never know what those around you are going through, we all should try to be aware. #mentalhealthawarenessmonth

Some of the five signs I experienced were Withdrawn, Poor Self-Care, & Hopelessness.  My therapist feels that my depression has been with me for a lot longer than I can even remember.  I was self medicating my depression with food until I became morbidly obese to the point I needed to undergo gastric sleeve surgery to basically save my life.  Only problem was that while I was fixing my physical appearance and health I was still suffering inside and to make things worse took away my way of self medicating.  This caused me to begin a dark spiral.  I became very withdrawn from everything and everybody.  Staying up most of the night and sleeping away most of the day.  At times locking myself in the bathroom with my tablet and playing the same game over and over just to occupy my mind and avoid dealing with life.  Although I never came close to acting on it I did at times wonder if maybe it would be easier in the end for everyone if I was no longer here on earth.  Now I talk with my therapist every week, my psychiatrist once a month, and working on finding what medication will work best for me.  No matter how tough things have been for me lately I'm so glad I'm still here on earth and now know that I AM THE CHANGE!! @changedirection @officialduffmckagen

Double post day again ✌️ Hubby & I have had a pretty busy week. Well, busier than our normal-busy with three kids anyway. He’s had to put in extra work time at home in the evening. And I’ve had to work late a couple of nights.
Today, we finally caught a break, and he decided to play video games once the kids were in bed. I like the way he thinks. 😏

Day 21: Take a break from adulting now and then. 🎮👾
As much as we need to know how much we can busy-ness we can take, we also need to know when to give ourselves a break. It could be the difference between burning out and thinking with clarity. Also, it’s just fun!

Today was a long day!!!🤷🏻‍♀️ I am just about finishing work. My @apple Watch & Health App show that I walked 8 miles. FYI, this wasn’t in the gym. I literally walked 8 miles between meetings that were at different venues in Manhattan. Right now, I am sitting on the couch, ready to watch #hartofdixie. I don’t feel this level of energy or exuberance that you see in the picture. And I am OK with it🤗 To be honest, acceptance of self hasn’t always come easily to me🙏🏼For years, I tried being the person others expected me to be or I assumed they wanted me to be. Confusing. Aggravating. It was a recipe for a disaster🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ .

Learn to love and accept where you are. It’s OK to admit you are feeling  exhausted. It’s OK to not take a phone call. It’s OK to prioritize yourself. It’s OK to cancel a commitment. A little personal story but due to the big changes I had to endure in the past few months, I  struggled with maintaining my mental health. Moving away, culture shock, leaving behind an old life & living in a room wasn't easy for me. At times, I  felt isolated, trapped, lonely, eventually hitting a downward spiral. Now, just to clarify, this post is not for attention of any sort. Speaking up about issues like these aren't easy, but it can help others to know that they are not alone. So lets remove the stigma and take care of each other. And just as much we prioritize physical health, let's do the same for the mind ❤

It is “Graduation time” around the treasure valley (and the entire country)! It makes me think back on all the times I ran the boys around to practice or running from one basketball game to another...I remember thinking “I wish I had a night off to just relax”....WELL...now I would give anything to go back and take them to one more practice...watch them play in one more game....yell GO BROTHER from the stands AND sit in awe of the talent they both possessed! 
TAKE IT IN all you mommas and daddy’s. Enjoy the chaos in rushing to practice...the game....the community vibe...for it ends TOO SOON! I long to have that time back...to soak up the noise, the atmosphere, the whole experience with my boys! They are now grown with their own careers and family! I WILL take the time to enjoy these chaotic moments with my grandbabies knowing it will go by way too fast! These moments promote a healthy mentality...revel in the NOW!

It is “Graduation time” around the treasure valley (and the entire country)! It makes me think back on all the times I ran the boys around to practice or running from one basketball game to another...I remember thinking “I wish I had a night off to just relax”....WELL...now I would give anything to go back and take them to one more practice...watch them play in one more game....yell GO BROTHER from the stands AND sit in awe of the talent they both possessed!
TAKE IT IN all you mommas and daddy’s. Enjoy the chaos in rushing to practice...the game....the community vibe...for it ends TOO SOON! I long to have that time back...to soak up the noise, the atmosphere, the whole experience with my boys! They are now grown with their own careers and family! I WILL take the time to enjoy these chaotic moments with my grandbabies knowing it will go by way too fast! These moments promote a healthy mentality...revel in the NOW!

Mother nature is kicking my ass, hence the little bloat. I’m posting this because no matter what I post I want you all to know that I don’t always have a “super flat tummy”. Anyone ever have body dysmorphia? It’s becoming fixated on perceived imperfections, it happens to me. A lot of people actually. But that’s why I wanna talk about this.

This month is mental health awareness & I feel like I keep it a buck w/ those of you that follow me. & I’ve been having it these past couple of days, so I’ve been taking it day by day. I know I always say to focus on the positive but sometimes things linger with in yourself & the best way to deal with it is at its forefront. Mental health is everything & if you EVER feel like you need help there are plenty of resources, including myself. I hope you all take your mental health seriously & do what it takes to make yourself happy. Being down in the dumps happens to everyone but it won’t last forever.

Just remember you are incredible, & you make this world a better place. You have a ton of potential & this little bump in the road is just that, a bump in the road. Often times we don’t even realize it but these shitty times bring even better times to enjoy, soooo stay positive my friends 💛

Peace Corps Eastern Caribbean recognizes Mental Health Awareness Month, and it’s impact on Volunteers worldwide. This month is an important reminder to practice self-care and identify healthy coping strategies useful during service. Two of our volunteers from St. Vincent and the Grenadines shared some of their strategies with us:

Peace Corps Volunteer John:
“I like to go on walks to help deal with the stress that comes from being a Peace Corps Volunteer. This is a view of my village not far from my house. It’s a nice place to reflect and spend time by myself. Self-reflection and personal time is huge during Peace Corps service. We spend a lot of time with other people, so it is important we find that time to ourselves and protect it.” Peace Corps Volunteer Katie:
“The ways I cope with stress and anxiety are reading a good book, playing with all the animals in my community, and enjoying a hike. There are a lot of places to hike on the North Windward side of the island. The country side is beautiful and offers great views of the Atlantic Ocean!”

My junior and senior years of high school and summers in college, this place was my refuge. When I needed to get out of the house and away from people, this is where I went. The sound of rushing water. Being surrounded by nature. It was a place to go to escape from the depression and anxiety. Which was incredibly helpful in high school when I didn’t even have a diagnosis but the symptoms were there. i’m going to be brutally honest with y’all... i had absolutely no energy to smile for today’s post, so this is as good as it got. my mental health is suffering lately and i am not feeling like myself. i just want to lay in bed all day, sleeping, because i’d rather not be awake. anxiety and depression is no joke! all my girls out there who can understand, i feel you & you are not alone!

They don’t know what a budget is...Unfortunately sometime our habits define us in the eyes of others. We could focus on what other people think, OR we can choose to make intentional decisions to head in the direction we want our lives to go. We can choose to live intentionally. We can choose to create and develop healthier habits in our lives. Forget yesterday. Today. What will you choose today? 
P.S. - I’m choosing not to forgo my morning #coffee or my mid-day coffee. I love those moments. Literal, actual love. I am working toward being early, I’m not exactly known for my punctuality...but this week has been a success!

At DBD, we support causes that seek to make a lasting positive impact in the world. Recently, we partnered with @yourmomcares an important organization that seeks to fight the stigma surrounding children’s mental illness, and effectively change the narrative to mental wellness. Last week, DBD created a super limited capsule collection of sweaters for the #ymckisscampaign at @wheelhousegroup and we are pleased to announce we raised almost $1,200 in under one hour for the organization. Should we release a few online? 👀👀

I love freshly laundered bedding. I love my weighted blanket. But I so do not love putting the cover back on the blasted thing. Anxiety induced in order for anxiety to be reduced. Peace and oxymoronic indeed.

Sleep and I have a very love- hate relationship. I love sleep - yet restful, lengthy, rejuvenating sleep is rarely found - it’s as if it hates me. I take forever to fall asleep - waiting on my brain to slow the spinning - tend to be a vivid eventful dreamer - often waking in a bolt of panic - muscles clenched tight. Therefore I am more of a napper than a sleeper. Le sighs. 
I had done a lot of research on weighted blankets & was graciously gifted one from my momma five months ago. 
I am by no means a pro at sleeping now - for remain in napping cycles - but the blanket has helped. My body - legs - find a calm with more ease. I flip & flop about less - truly finding comfort in the weight. 
Have always been a member of the security blanket club - I’ve just leveled up. More peace and now to level up from naps.

Avoidant Personality Disorder-Overview
Avoidant personality disorder is one of a group of conditions called anxious personality disorders, which are marked by feelings of nervousness and fear. People with avoidant personality disorder have poor self-esteem. They also have an intense fear of rejection and being negatively judged by others. These feelings make them very uncomfortable in social situations, leading them to avoid group activities and contact with others.
Their way of thinking about and interpreting the world revolves around the thought that they are not good enough, and that others don't like them. They think of themselves as unappealing and socially inept. These types of thoughts create feelings of intense anxiety in social situations, along with a fear of being ridiculed, criticized, and rejected. The intensity of this fearful anxiety, and the discomfort it creates, compels them to avoid interpersonal situations. They might avoid parties or social events, and may have difficulty giving presentations at work or speaking up in meetings. Others might perceive them as distant or shy. They likely come across as stiff and restricted. All this will likely interfere with their ability to make friends, or to move ahead professionally.
Some with this disorder may fantasize about idealized, accepting and affectionate relationships, due to their desire to belong. They often regularly engage in daydreaming behaviors. Individuals with the disorder tend to describe themselves as uneasy, anxious, lonely, unwanted and isolated from others.They often feel themselves unworthy of the relationships they desire, so they shame themselves from ever attempting to begin them. If they do manage to form relationships, it is also common for them to abandon them out of pre-emptive fear of the relationship failing. (Cont)

Let's talk about mental health. Sometimes life just sucks. Depression is a serious struggle. Anxiety is frustrating & panic attacks are exhausting. I'm lucky to have an amazing team of family and friends that support me. I also have this little lady that knows I'm about to have a panic attack even before I do and sits with me until I can breathe again. It's a struggle but I am lucky to have my support group. If you also struggle, never feel alone and know it's okay to reach out. You'd be surprised who might be there for you. #mentalhealthawareness

Everything was going great, until it wasn’t. After unexpected losses and familiar disappointments, bad thoughts lead to bad days that lead to bad weeks and these past few months I have been going throughhhh ittt - getting to bed early, sleeping in late, self medicating, eating shitty food, and feeling shitty about/for myself. I was avoiding my friends, my family and my therapist. I knew not to believe the voices in my head, but I did anyway. I knew that this would pass but I still felt hopeless. I knew I was capable but I quit trying. I knew I needed to hold myself accountable but it was so much easier to blame everything on everyone else. I was losing sight of my goals and there weren’t enough motivational quotes or positive vibes to snap me out of it.. Until one day I did, slowly but surely. At first, showering and brushing me teeth or fixing my hair on the weekends were huge victories. I finally left the house for things other than food or work. I made art. I made decisions. I made it to therapy. I journaled. I moved my body. I set new intentions and clearer boundaries. I still have some shit to sort out but I finally don’t feel stuck, scared and defeated anymore.. This isn’t some cry for attention or an invite to my pity party. This is for the ones fighting a battle no one else can see. For the ones that feel alone in a crowded room. For the ones with heavy hearts. For the ones still struggling with their demons. I SEE YOU. Be patient with your healing. It’s not easy, but it gets easier. It gets better. Take care, I love you 💕
