I was already really looking forward to seeing The Long Insiders at Lil’s last night, because their original music is 50s/60s inspired rock n roll with a dark undertone that makes the place feel like that bar in the Tarantino movie From Dusk Till Dawn.
I researched some original pictures of bands in the 50s, and they tended to play in very well lit dance halls, but I did find some pictures from an Elvis movie that inspired me.
I chose the Classic Chrome film in my little Fujifilm XT1 📷 for high contrast, low saturation and set the ISO at 6400 and with a slow shutter speed of 1/30 and no flash, spent the whole gig snapping away and enjoying their music.
They have beautiful, vintage instruments that they play exquisitely. Nick on guitar and vocals has all the moves and matinee idol looks. What could I get wrong? I didn’t want to process them with filters afterwards. I wanted to be like a 50s photographer, choosing my settings and seeing how they ‘developed’. I’m happy with how they came out, my slowly improving skills and how authentic they look.
But most of all, it was great to hear such a cool band in Witney.
