This girl still loves me (and I love her), even if I'm mad at myself for the handler errors I made this weekend at our Barn Hunt competition. Despite my errors we had a lot of fun, learned a lot together and had some important new experiences- first time competing on straw instead of hay, first time in a completely open air ring, and first time hunting in a majorly distracting environment with dock diving next to us and show dogs being paraded in front of us on the way to/from competition.
Boo shot through the first 2 divisions (Novice and Open) of Barn Hunt incredibly quickly (quicker than most dogs) and we (mostly me) have struggled in Senior. There's definitely a reason they consider this the hardest division and toughest title to earn! Though this trial was tough and we only earned 1 Q in 6 tries (we earned 1st Place as well as High in Class on that run), the overall experience this Trial gave us was incredibly important and will make us a better team in the long-run.
This weekend I was hoping we would earn 2 Qs for our Senior title so we could qualify for Nationals since it's in Dallas this year. It's a little disappointing because I know Boo would have had a blast hunting at Nationals. But we'll plan on watching Nationals in 2019 and competing in 2020. Until then, we'll keep playing the game of Barn Hunt, having fun, and improving our teamwork. It's all about having fun (and bonding) with your dog!
