Part one of a short story by @louise.bourbon - to be continued
Le dernier chemin - The Last Way - Mon Dieu, do they really think I'm cowardly enough to take my own life?
Stunned, he looks at the tray on which his dîner was brought to him. No knife, no fork. No respect for his customs.
Unwillingly he shakes his head. In these dark times, respect is something that belongs to the past anyway. - As if I would elude my exécution in such a shameful way.
After a moment of silence he adds: - I die without guilt. I would wish that my death would cause the happiness of those who wanted it, and that my death would take away all the misfortune that I see for thé future, but it is hard to believe. Anarchy everywhere, and it will not get better. Poor France.
He lowers his gaze. Nobody should see his tears he sheds now, in the last hours of his earthly existence, not for himself, but for his country. He does not want his guards to see, for he wishes them neither the joy of his tears nor the punishment of those who have compassion for this.
The minutes run. Then the time has finally come. One last time he can look into the eyes of his wife, his children. Again the water Flow into his own, but he must be strong at this moment. The glances of his daughter and son already tell of the things they have seen, the things they have had to experience. Both have far too old eyes for children of their age.
The man looks into the eyes of his sister. - Take care of our children. My wife will soon follow me.
She nods, able to understand the silent message he sent her. Even when they were children they talked like that, when they had no idea that the world in which they had grown up would no longer exist.
His gaze seeks that of his wife. Both know that the guards watch through a window in front of the door, registering every gesture, every word. Nevertheless, they manage to stealthily squeeze each other's hands for a moment. A last sign of a love that is already being crushed under the power of outrageous words.
