“I think they come to me for alternative wow,” said Maurice Harris, the LA-based floral designer behind @bloomandplume. About 15 years ago, while working as a window designer, Maurice became “the office arrangement guy” — the one tasked with making baby showers and birthdays look fabulous. 💐 When the economy crashed, he found himself doing odd jobs. The ones that came his way often involved flowers. And so
#bloomandplume became a reality. Maurice seeks to occupy an untapped niche within the floral market. “I’m only good at being myself,” he said. “I’m a black gay dude. That’s not going away; that’s who I am. I apply that to how I arrange flowers.” When his Instagram following took off, though, he began to feel a disconnect: Many of the people who were engaging with his work couldn't do so in real life. That's why last month — after years of planning and at least 30 rejections for loans — he and his brother opened Bloom & Plume Coffee. He compares his floral business to haute couture. The coffee shop? “It's more like ready-to-wear. It's accessible, it’s just more fun.” During
#BlackHistoryMonth, we're celebrating black designers working in the U.S. We visited Maurice Harris at his floral studio and coffee shop in LA. ☕️🌸
