🇬🇧🇬🇧 Catch Report 🇬🇧🇬🇧
Consultant Tony Smeets makes the most of this season’s final session.
My syndicate at Hollybush Lakes closes for a few weeks before the start of a new season, so this was going to be my last chance of a weekend session before the shut-down. The main lake had decided to shut itself down early, and because I wanted to make the most of my precious fishing time, I decided to fish the Station Lake. It's not the most awe-inspiring piece of water you’ll ever see, but it contains some stunning fish and I fancied having a cuddle with one.
On arrival, I had a walk around with Deezle the carp terrier and eventually spotted a patch of bubbles. This turned out to be the only sign on offer, so I plotted up within convenient casting range and rushed to get the rods out on the spot. The trap of choice was a hinge rig, comprising a 20lb FHX boom, a size 10 ring swivel, with 25lb Camo H2o to a size 5 Chod hook. My hookbait was the ever-reliable 14mm Code Red pop-up, topped with a piece of washed-out pink plastic corn. I tweaked the balance until it looked good enough to eat and hoped the carp agreed.
The spot the fish were feeding on was nice and firm, my cast hit the mark first time, and the lead went down with a thump. I managed to repeat this marksmanship, and with all my rods out, it was time to sit back with a coffee.
Slow start … and then ….
The day and night were slow, and only a large bream came off that spot, just on dark, in that seriously annoying way bream have. I got the rod back out with a few spods of Code Red to keep the hookbait company, and retired to bed.
First light saw the birds chirping, a westerly gusting across the lake, and me standing by my dormant rods, looking forlornly at the water and wondering what to do to change things. Then, the right-hand rod absolutely roared off!
10 minutes later I landed this nice 30.
