Welcome back to our Bridge Builders series, where we meet back here to learn about the wonderful and impactful #BridgeBuilders at Gesher.

Meet Tzemach Schloss, Gesher’s Security Forces Coordinator!
#About you

I have been involved in Gesher for almost five years now, having started as a Facilitator for four years prior to my role as Security Forces Coordinator. I’m currently finishing up my last year at Tel Aviv University studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) 📚. I grew up in Beit Shemesh and now live in Srigim Li On with my wife Estee (a previous Gesher facilitator herself). #About your connection to Gesher

I first heard about Gesher when I was on a seminar in Herzliya and saw the various workshops they conducted and the amazing impact they were able to make on these students. I instantly felt so much comfort and hope in finding a place that really #bridgesthegap between the different sectors of Israeli society in a fun, dynamic, respectful and influential way. After that I decided I had to be involved and started as facilitator in the Education Department.
#About your role in Gesher
I’m the Security Forces Coordinator at Gesher, which includes IDF Training Courses, Officer Courses and helping Haredim integrate into their IDF units. I find my work with the IDF incredibly meaningful as the IDF serves as a central meeting point for Israelis of all backgrounds. It is, for many, the first time an Israeli will encounter a Jew from a different background and seeing these soldiers get to know one another and engage in meaningful dialogue is truly inspiring.

#Your drive for social impact

My drive for social impact comes from seeing how much we judge one another and how many stereotypes we have built up without even knowing the other. Working at Gesher gives me the opportunity to interact with people who are different than me, come from a different background than I have, but serve as great friends nonetheless. It’s amazing how much you can learn from others and through this, how much you can learn about yourself.
#Something we didn’t know about you

I’ve been a huge Hapoel Tel Aviv fan since I was in first grade! ⚽️

Nearly 50% of black people have a net worth approaching zero because their debts negate any property or assets. •
Although a handful of black entertainers and athletes are included in the millionaire category, their standing is most often a result of increased income, which is not the same as increased wealth. •
Income cannot be passed down to your offspring. Income is merely the tool to build wealth. •
Wealth is used to not just to pay the rent or buy groceries, but to create opportunities. Wealth refers to economic assets. •
You want to focus on using your income to buy things that you not only need but that appreciate in value. Not things that go down in value e.g. car vs. house. •
Your net worth is your assets minus what you owe. You should be focused on your net worth so that you can pass it on. This is what builds #generationalwealth and #bridgesthegap.

People simply want to feel heard.
We want to be seen, supported and acknowledged.
After months (rolling into years) of issues, I had a face-to-face meeting with a new local manager working for a payroll company dealing with my son’s Direct Payments. From my point of view, she did all the right things.
She acknowledged mistakes had been made.
She expressed the values of her company to support – recognising they had fallen short in the past.
She asked questions about our experience and then LISTENED.
She listened, advised and went away with actions
Actions to try and improve service.
Actions to try and install the vision and mission of support within the service.
It really isn’t hard to do but for some reason it feels as though it happens so rarely.
She left and I took a big deep breath.
I took a deep breath of hope.

This is why I am passionate about communication. It makes a difference at every level. Communicating well, listening and trying to understand perspectives, directly impacts the productivity of your work and the experience of families.
Good communication #bridgesthegap between parent/carers and professionals. #bridgethegap #familyperspective #coproductioninpractice
