The Emporer, The Fool And The Hermit. 4-0-9. Okay, this is even more crazy than you are already used to from me. I am also very serious about it, as usual. I rarely think of numerology. But sometimes it reveals itself to me in vision like states. Or it comes to me as a riddle. Sometimes while I’m teaching in the mornings, like this one: In exactly 33 days I will be turning 49. 7 x 7. The sacred number squared. At the same time this birthday marks 40 years of my Yoga practice. That’s right. I picked up a practice when I was 9. Pranayama, Asana, Tratak, Japa, Nada, Natya, Svadhyaya, Dhyana. Done it all.
So the number 40 means something. Jesus spent 40 dayts in the desert being tried by Satan. There are 40 days between Ash Wednesday and Palm Sunday or Easter Sunday (depending on the way it’s counted), the period of Lent. If you pick up a Mantra Sadhana, it’s usually for a period of 40 days. There is something very specific about this number. To me it’s the number of Tantra. Trantra is the Sanskrit term for technique. The number 4 is the number of planet earth, matter, material existence. It means mastery over the elements through hard work and discipline (ploughing the soil, sowing seeds, reaping crops). The number 0 - okay, we could easily discuss whether or not this even is a number for ages - 0 stands for potential, origin, free choice. It stands for eternity and infinity.
Tantra stands for the highest discipline you can find on Earth and liberation. The number 40 also marks a period of latency in which things remain hidden.
After 10 years of Yoga practice, age 19, I became a mother. After 20 years of Yoga practice, aged 29, I became a dancer. After 30 years of Yoga practice, age 39, I took my daughter back to my first home, Jamaica, for the first time. After 40 years of yoga practice, I have gone through a rough transformation process and re-opened my Yoga school. There no longer is a distinct separation between private and public space here. I can no longer hide. I need no longer hide. It’s my coming out as a human being. You ain’t seen nothing yet. Me neither. #ashtangayoga. #meditation
